This Sunday marks the start of another racing season, as NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) hosts its 51st running of the Daytona 500, which is referred to as the series “Super bowl” of races on its calendar. And while it’s the 60th Anniversary of NASCAR, ironically it’s also the same for the FIA’s (La Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) premiere racing series Formula 1, as both are reputedly the top racing series of Europe and North America.

But In case you’re wondering about the discrepancy in years between the Daytona 500 and NASCAR, the Daytona International Speedway wasn’t completed until 1959, when Bill France Sr. vision was opened for competition upon what once were Florida swamplands.

And while you’ve all heard of names like Gordon, Stewart, Johnson, Earnhart (Jr.) Kahne and Edwards, are you aware of the influx of Open Wheel talent to try making it as Stock Car drivers? As the person to potentially open the floodgates of talent transfer was none other then F1 pilot Juan Pablo Montoya who shocked the racing world with his decision to leave the glitz ‘N glamour of Formula One and return Stateside to his previous boss chip Ganassi in 2007. Montoya’s move was also mimicked by rising Champ Car driver AJ Allmendinger, who jumped upon the Red Bull bandwagon after receiving a massive pay raise.

Yet, last year saw the largest talent drain upon the Open Wheel Racing world, as four high profile drivers made the headlines as the stars of the 2008 Rookie crop, as the past two year’s Indy 500 and IRL Champions Dario Franchitti and Sam Hornish Jr. were joined by past Formula 1 and CART Champion Jacques Villeneuve and CART star Patrick Carpentier, whom would all have less than stellar seasons, as three fourth’s of the quartet are gone. Although Carpentier managed to score a single pole position, he, along with fellow countryman Villenuve and Scotland’s Franchitti have all since departed.

Thus with the current plight of the Global economy, there’s been much reshaping of the Racing Team’s landscape, with the amalgamation of three storied franchises, as first Petty Enterprises closed its doors after 60yrs of business before merging with Gillette-Evernham Motorsports, forming a new four car entity known as Richard Petty Motorsports.

This was preceded by the legendary DEI (Dale Earnhart Inc.) founded by the late “Intimidator,” seeking to merge with the floundering Chip Ganassi/Felix Sabates team to form Earnhart Ganassi Racing, which saw driver Martin Truex Jr. capture the pole for this year’s event. Lastly, Roger Penske did a deal with Bill Davis Racing to form Penske Championship Racing and secure Owner’s points for the team’s third entry, as the top 35 points holders are assured of racing each week.

And thus, this year’s qualifying saw 56 drivers vying for the field’s 43 starting spots, with Truex on pole with 50yr old “Ironman” Mark Martin alongside, as only the first two spots were locked-in, with the rest to be decided with the running of the Gatorade twin 150’s, where all even qualifiers race in one sprint heat, while all odd competitors race in the second, with the races final eight transfer slots up for grabs. But don’t ask me to explain it, As the last eight open grid spots were determined in the following manner: Tony Stewart, whose started his own racing team known as Stewart-Haas Racing, along with Scott Riggs, Jeremy Mayfield and AJ Allmendinger gained entrance based on their Thursday race performances, while Bill Elliott, Travis Kvapil and Regan Smith made the show based upon their qualification times, with the final spot going to past champion Terry Labonte.

Rookie Scott Speed, the latest American to race in Formula 1 for Scuderia Toro Rosso before losing his ride to Sebastian Bourdais, was inserted at Red Bull Racing as AJ Allmendinger’s replacement this season, while Allmendinger who now drives for Richard Petty Motorsports fortunately raced his way into the big show and fared much better then Speed. Allmendinger will start from Row 10 in the 20th position in the Daytona 500 which pays a quarter of a million dollars for starting, as Speed wound up 38th, in Row 19, while Hornish Jr. Rolls off 29th in Row 14 for Penske Championship Racing this Sunday…

Knicks defeat Suns at Home
January 27th, 2009 · No Comments

Having previously fallen to the Phoenix Suns upon his homecoming return, Mike D’Antoni’s steadily improving squad garnered their revenge upon the vastly improving Phoenix suns, led by a resurgent “Big Cactus,” a.k.a. Shaquille O’Neal.

“At age 36, O’Neal was presumed to be entering his career twilight. He has not averaged 20 points in a season since 2005-6, or averaged a double-double since 2004-5. He played an average of just 53 games over the last three seasons.”

Yet Shaq has been feeling extremely energized lately after the Suns trainer helped the Big Cactus solve a nagging hip injury, while Shaquille was also most complementary toward his ex-coach D’Antoni, by stating: he was sad to see him leave for New York last spring.

“He’s a great man, an honest man and the system really works,” said O’Neal, who then paid D’Antoni the ultimate compliment, comparing him with Phil Jackson and Pat Riley.”

“He’s the truth.”

And while Shaq and the Suns had the day off, D’Antoni was busy holding practice, but gave his players extra time to watch President Barrack Obama’s Inauguration Day events by holding practice a half hour early, which apparently had its dividends as the Knickerbockers’ defeated D’Antoni’s old team the following evening *Jan. 21) in The Garden by a score of 114-109, having won four of their past six games, upon reaching the NBA’s season halfway point.

David Lee led the Knicks with 25 points and 16 rebounds, while going head to head with Shaq all night, who managed a respectable 21 points, albeit only scoring three in the second half, while Nate Robinson scored 20 points off the bench for the Knicks, whose record improved to 17-24 after the victory.

Even more impressive about the win was the fact that the Knicks were down by 13 at halftime, before snapping their five game losing streak to the Suns, as Lee made O’Neal have to come out and guard him on the perimeter as Lee took an unusual 21 shots which D’Antoni admitted was certainly not in his game plan. Yet, Lee’s performance powered the Knicks to beat another playoff bound team.

And with the Suns closing to a scant four points behind (107-103) in the fourth quarter with just under 26 seconds left, a Grant Hill turnover forced the Suns to foul the Knicks, with Chris Duhon and Al Harrington closing the game by making 7 of 8 free throws, to seal the win.

Yet, even more impressive was rookie forward Danilo Gallinari, whose game highlight’s included a fantastic block of Shaq from behind, along with scoring 10 points and pulling down four rebounds during his 18 minutes of playing time…

Where should I get tickets for Fenway, Wrigley or Yankee Stadium?
December 22nd, 2008 · No Comments
The Wrigley Field ball park was built in 1914 for the Federal Baseball League and opened in 1915. In 1916, after the dispansion of the Federal League, the Chicago Cubs began playing Major League Baseball and have played there ever since, while the NFL’s Chicago Bears made Wrigley Field their home between 1921 and 1970. The stadium is the second oldest active ball park and if you’re looking for either tickets to the Chicago Blackhawk’s or Chicago cubs then please visit Wrigley Field Tickets.

The storied Fenway Ball Park opened in 1912 on the same day as Tiger’s Stadium, with the famous 37 foot high Monster Wall being erected in 1934 and the ball park has been most unkind to left handed pitchers. Fenway has hosted three Major League Baseball All Star games in 1946, 1961 and 1999. As the long standing home of the Boston Red Sox, who won the Major League Baseball World Series as recently as 2004 and 2007, it’s never to early to order your Fenway Park Tickets for 2009.

As you may be aware of, the original, famous Yankee stadium that was built in 1923 has just hosted its final season of Major League Baseball, with a brand new state of the art Yankee Stadium being constructed nearby. This new Yankee Stadium will open on April 3, 2009 with an exhibition Major League Baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees. At a projected cost of $1.6 billion to complete the new Yankee Stadium should be quite spectacular and everyone will wish to check out the new stadium, so order you’re 2009 Yankee Stadium Tickets today!

D’Antoni comes home
December 18th, 2008 · No Comments

As everybody knows by now, the architect of the Phoenix Suns run and gun, shoot in less than seven seconds Blitzkrieg offense, Coach Mike D’Antoni was given the heave-ho after four frustratingly tantalizing seasons in Arizona, having failed to secure an NBA Championship for the Phoenix Suns.

Thus D’Antoni packed his bags and departed for the Big Apple, in order to hopefully right a completely waterlogged and sinking steamship known as the New York Knicks, as D’Antoni, along with new General Manager Donnie Walsh, formerly with the Indiana Pacers had been hired to clean up the remnants of Isaiah Thomas’s woeful Knickerbockers’.

Last year in an attempt to beef up the Suns, new GM Steve Kerr, brought Shaquille O’Neal to the Valley of the Sun, with Shaq being christened “the Big Cactus,” which obviously changed the philosophy of D’Antoni’s run ‘N gun offense, as it took time for the new recruit to gel with his teammates.

Kerr tried to defuse potential media ridicule by making the statement; “If it works, I’m a genius, if it doesn’t I’m a Moron.” To which the lumbering Cactus has wholeheartedly agreed with.

Yet, the Suns, along with the 7’1’’, 325lb center, have been having growing pains this season under the direction of their new coach Terry Porter’s system, as several key players have mentioned not enjoying playing for the ex-NBA guard, most notably of the Portland Trailblazers. As even Shaq has commented; “If you’re going to hire an assassin, then let him go out and kill someone, I can’t be Shaq taking only 6 or 7 shots.”

And while the Phoenix Suns are still seeking their first NBA title, Shaq has been eloquent as always, stating that he’ll need more then just a little watering if the Big Cactus is to succeed in the Desert, although his two year $40 million salary should help him pay his bills.

Although D’Antoni has been most notably surrounded in this seasons Stephon Marbury controversy, the anticipation built, as Mike D’Antoni was set to make his initial return to Arizona, with his Knicks facing off on the Sun’s home court December 15th. Yet, the fans haven’t forgotten the irrepressible Italian, as D’Antoni was given a standing ovation which didn’t die down until the lights were dimmed in order to announce the starting line-ups.

And although both teams ran quite a lot, D’Antoni’s Knickerbockers’ just couldn’t ever quite pull ahead, in part due to their lack of converting three pointers, while tying their record for attempts with 37, they only completed 5 for a whopping 13.5% average.

Thus, it must have seemed even more ironic as the 4th Quarter turned into a defensive game, with the Big Cactus towering above D’Antoni’s small line-up, as Shaq converted an amazing 11 for 18 free throw attempts, with Knicks starters David Lee and Wilson Chandler fouling out, along with Jared Jeffries lasting only six minutes with a sore leg.

Then D’Antoni’s beloved ex-floor general Steve Nash stuck the dagger thru the Knicks with a 3 pointer with 28.2 seconds left, as D’Antoni could only look skywards as Nash dribbled out the clock before the two embraced courtside, as the Phoenix suns defeated the New York Knicks 111-103.
